SESSIONS

LEGO ROBOTS CAMPS 9 TO 14

Got crazy-awesome lego skills? Or just getting started with lego robots? Either way, this camp is for you. We’ll break into groups to design and build our robots – and then focus on programming them to use a bunch of cool sensors… color sensors, ultra-sonic sensors, gyro sensors, and touch sensors – we love sensors! And your robot will use them all to navigate the super-challenging walled maze. Then, at the end of the week, you’ll use your new mad programming skills and design your own robot to compete in the epic sumo battle! Will your robot have what it takes to beat the competition?

Parents: A great break from typical sports camps, challenge your kids’ to play with their imagination and see what they can create – while secretly learning programming skills!
This camp is for ages 9 to 14. Note: Sorry students who are not yet 9 may not attend regardless of lego proficiency.

LEGO ROBOTS CAMP 6 TO 8

Calling all young lego robot designers! This is the best way to get started. Together, we’ll learn how to build cool robots and other machines. We’ll show you how to use gears, belts, motors, and computers to bring your robot to life. Student will engage in a mix of building activities including the lego robotic system WeDo 1.0 and 2.0, Lego Creator sets, crafts, board games and video games.

Parents: Designed specifically as an intro for younger kids, this camp covers all the basics of mechanics. They’ll be budding engineers by week’s end!

This camp is for ages 6 to 8. Note: Sorry students who are not yet 6 may not attend regardless of lego proficiency. Proof of age will be checked.

MINECRAFT COMPUTER CAMP

Love Minecraft? Then join us for a week in this great virtual sandbox where you can build anything! We’ll cover the basics and then move on to redstone Minecraft machine building and how to design new texture images so you can digitally paint the entire look of your worlds. Want to share your world with your friends? You’ll learn how to author your own Minecraft tutorials for YouTube. We will also get to experiment with some Mods that add features and change the game.

Parents: While your child thinks they’re playing, we’re secretly using the game to teach technology, design, problem solving, and presentation skills (insert evil laugh here). If screen time is a concern of yours you will prefer the robotics or animation classes.

This camp is for ages 8 to 14 Note: Sorry students who are not yet 8 may not attend regardless of minecraft proficiency. Proof of age will be checked.

POKÉMON DESIGNER CAMP

Pokémon camp will be a creative camp where students learn to draw Pokémon characters and will develop their own Pokémon cards with their own character art and stories. Our students will also develop digital painting skills with our computers and art tablets.
Our students will play a number of Pokémon inspired actives while developing their creative skills. Activities will be split between accessible games and tools for younger fans of Pokemon and more technical skilled activities for older students.

Other highlights

  • learning the mechanics of Pokémon
  • developing strategies for Pokémon battles learning strengths and weaknesses
  • team building
  • designing a new type of Pokémon and test them in battle
  • participating in battle simulations

This camp is for ages 6 to 14. Note: Sorry students who are not yet 6 may not attend regardless of lego proficiency. Proof of age will be checked.

STAR WARS FAN ADVENTURES

Young Jedi padawan and Empire recruits will have a blast building, training, and playing in the star wars universe. Kids will get hands-on with some wicked cool experiments as we leap into science with both feet. Overcome the force of gravity by building your own rocket! Compete in pod races! Make remote controls out of bananas! Build the latest Star Wars lego kits! Design your own light saber! Come to this camp, you must. (thanks, Yoda)

Parents: Help your kids embrace the wonder that is Star Wars. Filled with science-made-fun and arts and crafts, this camp is one your kids will always remember.

This camp is for ages 6 to 8. Note: Students up to age 10 may attend however the activities and lego builds are aimed at ages 6 to 8. Proof of age will be checked.

ARDUINO PROGRAMMING OPTION

Students Interested in learning to program and electronics can add this option to their week of camp. Spend an hour each day on this introduction to Arduino and get to take home your very own micro controller to continue to tinker on projects at home. Available to students age 9 to 14 enrolled in any full week Brick Works Academy Camp.

Combines hardware and software platforms for a fun hands-on learning environment. Children will work on different projects each week while learning to design and create their own programs!

An Arduino is a fairly simple microcontroller computer - a small computer that runs only one program (unlike a general purpose computer, or smart phone these days). In order to program it, you need a special program running on your laptop. Children will learn how to use that special program, write their own code (very similar to C code) or a visual programming option like scratch, and learn to upload the program into their Arduino (Nano). The circuit board is a specially designed board with fairly simple circuits that the students can use to turn on or off the LEDs, a noise buzzer, read sensors like a Light-Dependent Resistor (LDR), etc. There are even two expansion slots for additional sensors if the students want to expand their knowledge! Below are examples of topics covered in the classes:

Introduction to Arduino and the Edu-Shield 1

  • Blinking Lights
  • Morse Code and blinking
  • Variables, Conditions, and the Serial Monitor
  • Digital versus Analog, and Learn to read pins (read the button)
  • Learn For/Next and While loops. Start work on their own Projects
  • Design and program their own programs and present them

LEGO MECHANICAL ENGINEERING

Ready to take your lego creations to the next level with electric motors, gears, cams, and more? We'll put lego into motion and work together to build a Rube Goldberg machine. These are also known as "Great Ball Contraptions" in the lego community and they're built at lego conventions around the world. You'll design and build an awesome module, and your machine will feed the next machine...which will feed the next machine...and so on and so on. In the end, hundreds of balls will be cycling through the machines in a continuous, epic loop. What will your machine look like? Learn more about great ball contraptions on youtube. click here

Parents: Dream of your child going into Mechanical or Systems Engineering? This is a great first step!

This camp is for ages 9 to 14. Note: Sorry students who are not yet 9 may not attend regardless of lego proficiency.
